Anyways, I'm Oliver. I started a computer science degree specialising in Artificial Intelligence just before ChatGPT came out and all the AI hype started, which I must admit was luck rather than judgement. I'm interested in all things AI, so I have tried to understand it more by doing my master's in it.

I am also always trying the best AI tools to help me with many aspects of my life. I love the philosophical questions surrounding AI and how it's going to impact the future.

Now most of my time goes on building LLM systems and checking whether they actually work, mostly retrieval and evaluation.

The technical side

Business science in Cape Town, then computer science specialising in Artificial Intelligence at Charles University in Prague, where my final exam was graded 1 (Excellent) overall, and now a master's in AI in Paris. Weirdly, I'm an author on a paper about procedural terrain generation, published at an IEEE conference, so if you like Minecraft as much as I do, I can tell you all about how it's made. A lot of AI advice comes from people who learned the tools. I was taught what's underneath them, and I like to think this is one of the things that sets me apart. It also means I am pretty good at building software using AI tools. I think the people best positioned for the future are those who are experts at their own field without needing AI, yet very good at using AI to increase their capabilities.

Scientific Citation Retrieval

Find the papers a research paper cites, out of a corpus of 20,000. Our team of four fused eight retrievers, and about half of what we gained came from noticing that 97.6% of citations stay inside one field.

Does Retrieval Make Generated Copy Sound Like the Client?

I built the retrieval system a marketing consultancy's content team uses every day to draft posts in each client's voice. My M1 internship was the study behind it. Retrieval raised an automatic voice score in testing, but when I checked that score against blind human ratings it didn't track them, so it can't be trusted on its own. I also found my own scoring was matching posts against themselves, and corrected it in the report.

Constraint-Aware Terrain Generation

A Unity tool that fills in game terrain around the parts a designer has already placed, like a road or a race track, without changing their height. It was my bachelor's thesis at Charles University, and my supervisor extended it into a full paper at IEEE Conference on Games 2026, where I'm second author. (Too many hours in Minecraft made it an easy topic to pick.)

VAE and DRAW, Compared

We built a VAE and DRAW from scratch to see what DRAW's steps and attention each add. DRAW builds a digit up over ten steps, and can learn to move a small attention window around as it goes. A group project of three, in PyTorch.
